George B's father was born Cathcarte
County Scotland. He came to the USA with his brother and
George B (then 4). His brother was a weight lifter. He never
became a US citizen but was a stone cutter in the US. No
info available on death.
George B's mother, Gracie, was from
the Todd-Johnson family of ship building fame (dirty shirt
tail). George B's mother was ostersized by family for
marrying a commoner. Gracie remarried after her husband
died. No children from the second marriage.
George B was born in Cathcarte County
Scotland in 1902. He moved to Glasglow at some point. After
growing up in US, he started out as a butcher but didn't
like and switched to stone cutting.
George B's father and Gracie had two
other kids, Ted and Marion, both born in Bedford, OH around
1911 for Ted and 1913 for Marion, in the house the family
built. This was when Bedford "the country." Marion
eventually moved to Florida.
Ted Todd married Ethal and had a son
Sonny and daughter Mary Jane. Sonny died young (about 19)
and not sure what happened to Mary Jane. Ethal lived in
Brecksville after Ted died. Ethal lived to an old age (still
alive in late 60's).
Marion was a Scottish dancer and
received several medals for competion. She married Tommy
Cambell. Tommy was schauffer for Halle family (dept store
dynasty in Cleveland). They had some children but no info
available. One daughter we remember.
George B and Ruth met in Bedford and
married. Both were very head strong. George E said their
marriage was like putting "matches to dynamite." Early in
their marriage, around the time George E was 3, George B and
Ruth toured the 48 states building fireplaces and camping.
He soon became a journeyman mason and was head journeyman
and did many high profile masonry projects in Cleveland.
Tommy Campell and Ted did the carving
on the Detroit Superior street bridge.
Charles Greene, Ruth's Dad, patented
partes of the Huiet machines which moved coal from barges.
He moved the family to Bedford.
Around 1930, the heart of the
depression, George B and Ruth get divorced. George B went to
Bedford. Dad and Ruth lived with Vona and Charles
Greene. They barely had money for food and rent. Their house
had no heat, so they lived in the kitchen because it was
warm. Vona went to work as private secretary of manager of
traffic dept for National Carbon Co, Lyle Harris. Vona and
Lyle started relationship and Lyle rented them a nicer
house. When Lyle got promoted, Vona took over his job.
Things were much better now and they eventually move to a
house on 33rd street near Archwood.
Around 1939, George E is going to
school, West Tech, and working full time at a foundary. He
knows Ed Knowles from school and meets his sister, Virgina,
who goes to West High. He walks his dog "Trouble" (named
after dog in book "The Yearling") around Virgina's house to
run into her. Virgina also roller skates up George E's
street to meet him. Since George E is working full time, he
has a lot of money and is able to suit Virgina in style.
George E also get's in good with "Pa" Knowles, Virgina Dad,
by helping around the house and building rabbit cages.
Around this time "Virgina decides she will marry George E"
(this is according to George E).
Dec 9th, 1941 Pear harbor is bombed.
In 1943 George E joins the Navy. He get the GED (high school
dip.).
He was sunk in 1945.
